What is an expert witness?

An expert witness is a person who has special knowledge or experience in a certain subject, like mental health, medicine, or social work. They are asked to help in court cases by giving their expert opinion.

Expert witnesses don’t take sides. Their job is to give honest, clear, and independent advice to help the court understand things that might be complicated. Our expert witnesses provide jargon-free reports that are written in plain English, so that everyone involved in the trial can better understand the complexities of the case. Their evidence helps judges, juries and other professionals make fair and informed decisions.

Expert witnesses can come from almost any area of work or expertise. For example, they might be a psychologist who looks at someone’s mental health, a social worker who gives advice about someone’s care and safety, or a doctor or nurse who talks about injuries or health problems.
